Subsistence support for four religious sisters
The Missionaries of Jesus Word and Victim (Misioneras de Jesús Verbo y Victima) are religious sisters whose special vocation is to work in poor, remote, and difficult regions where there are few or no priests. Their congregation was founded in 1961 in Peru and is now present in seven different countries of Latin America. As part of their ministry, the sisters pray with the faithful, bring them Holy Communion, baptize the children, comfort the sick and dying in their last hours, conduct funerals and Liturgies of the Word, and give catechetical instruction. They also offer practical help to the people with their concrete everyday needs and concerns. And all this beautiful and devoted service is nourished by their profound contemplative life of prayer.
Since 2015, the congregation has been present in Cuba as well. They are based in Guasimal, in the Diocese of Santa Clara, where there are over 27,000 Catholic faithful for every single priest. From this centre, the four sisters somehow manage to minister to around 9,000 people in eight different parishes.
It is an extremely poor area. Most of the people live by fishing, working the land, or rearing small livestock. Yet, “despite everything they go through, they are very friendly and cheerful people, full of hope,” Sister Veronica tells us. “They have a deep desire to experience God’s merciful love and truly know the God who always was, and always is, so close to them. Our hope rests in the children and even though we sometimes have to swim against the stream, we fix our gaze on our crucified Lord and ask Him for the grace and strength to continue this beautiful work.”
The sisters have no external income, so they are entirely dependent on our help. We would like to help them with a total of $5,520 for the coming year.
