ACN Project of the Week- Belarus

Help to renovate the convent of the Eucharistic Sisters in Barysaw

The congregation of the Handmaids of Jesus in the Eucharist—or  Eucharistic Sisters, as they are also known—was founded in 1923 in Lithuania. Today, the congregation has five convents in Belarus with a total of 20 sisters altogether.

The sisters are dedicated to the teaching and catechesis of children, young people, and adults, and also work in the parishes as sacristans, parish secretaries and choir leaders. Furthermore, they organise retreat days and workshops for families and young people and host youth camps or “Holidays with God” for children.

Currently there are three sisters living in the convent in Barysaw, which serves not only as a convent but also as a retreat house. It was built in 1958 and extended 30 years ago.

Thanks to the generous help of our benefactors, we were already able to help in 2016 with $37,500, to renovate the heating and wastewater system and so that the windows and doors could be replaced. But now further renovation work has become urgently necessary. The roof is leaking and needs to be repaired, the walls require insulation, and the foundations need to be strengthened. We have promised them $16,500.
