A RE-TRANSMISSION VEHICLE FOR CATHOLIC “RADIO LUMEN”

In 2013, “Radio Lumen” (or Light Radio) will celebrate its 20th anniversary. It is the only Catholic Slovak Radio broadcasting to listeners of all ages. The programming offers catechesis for children, adolescents and adults – it also offers news, music and moments of prayers such as the Rosary or laudes. Other programming is included on subjects such as health, leisure, and nature.

Radio Lumen especially wishes to transmit values and provide its listeners with objective information about the Church and about faith. In fact, in Slovakia, the Church is confronted with major social challenges. Though approximately sixty-five percent of 5.4 million Slovaks consider themselves Catholics, half of which attend church on Sunday, Christian values seem less and less present in this society and it is due in part to the media, some still in the hands of communists, and with broadcasts seem from a relativist perspective and liberal worldview.

Many of the faithful throughout the country who cannot be attend Mass celebrations; take part by listening to them on the radio. These radio-broadcasted Masses are of great help to the elderly and to the sick who cannot attend church.
For the transmission of the offices which, of course are never celebrated in a studio – the radio needs a vehicle for re-transmission. We have supported this project with a sum of $14,000 so that in the event that the people cannot come to church, the Church can go to the people.
