SUPPORT FOR FORMATION CONTINUES FOR YOUNG PRIESTS IN THE DIOCESE OF KATIOLA
On Ivory Coast, in the diocese of Katiola, Msgr. Ignace Bessi Dogbo wishes not only that the priests in his diocese be well trained, but that they also receive on-going training to help them meet the challenges which the Church is confronted with in Katiola. Therefore, his plan is that the young priests should meet together three times per year for a complementary formation session. The program will cover different subjects, like for example: administrating a parish. However, for the priests it will also serve as an opportunity for exchange as well as for the deepening of their chosen vocations.
The Catholic Church is still young in the Katiola Diocese, and celebrated its centennial only 4 years ago. The 21 parishes in the diocese are scattered throughout a territory of 33,000 square kilometers and are sometimes distant one from the other. Roman Catholics represent only about 11% the population.
We have supported this program to be attended by 31 young priests with a sum of $14,000. Broken down, that would be $500 per priest to attend three meetings – a small sum considering the great investment in the future a diocese, which is slowly recuperating from the ravages of civil war.
